詩や散文など文学テキストの断片を、絵画的なイメージと重ね合わせて描く新進作家、川村摩那。本書は、同名展のカタログとして出版されます。
川村は、兵庫県神戸市で生まれ育ち、早稲田大学を卒業後、京都芸術大学大学院で美術教育を受けました。その後も京都を制作拠点とし、自身で書いた詩や散文、日本の近代文学テキストの引用をもとに、文章の中に立ち現れる情景や文字そのものをモチーフにした絵画を制作しています。
川村の描く作品には、描き重ねられた様々な言葉の形が滲んで崩れ、他の図像と交わっていくことで、言葉と図像が絡みあう重層的なイメージが浮かび上がります。この川村の試みは、言葉の物質性とその可変性に着目しながら、絵画を通して新たなものごとの語りを開くことを目指しているように見えます。

川村 摩那（かわむら まな）

Mana Kawamura is an emerging artist whose paintings intertwine fragments of poetry, prose, and other literary texts with painterly imagery. This book is published as the catalogue for the exhibition of the same name.
Born and raised in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, Kawamura graduated from Waseda University before earning an MFA from Kyoto University of the Arts. Based in Kyoto, she creates paintings inspired by her own poetry and prose, as well as quotations from modern Japanese literature. She transforms both the scenes evoked by language and the physical forms of written characters into pictorial motifs.
In Kawamura’s works, layers of words blur and dissolve as they merge with other visual forms, creating richly layered images in which language and image become inextricably intertwined. By focusing on the materiality and mutability of words, her practice opens up new modes of storytelling through painting.
Positioned between what painting can communicate and what inevitably remains beyond communication, Kawamura’s works invite viewers to encounter new possibilities for narrative and meaning. Her distinctive visual language offers a new way of engaging with the relationship between language, image, and narrative.
Mana Kawamura
Born in Hyogo, Japan, in 1995. Graduated from the Department of Japanese Language and Literature, School of Humanities, Waseda University, in 2018. Completed an MFA in Oil Painting, Graduate School of Arts, Kyoto University of the Arts, in 2023.
