Shinro Ohtake
Born in Tokyo in 1955, Ohtake started presenting his artworks in and out of Japan from early 1980s. After his first retrospective “Shinro Ohtake: Zen-kei 1955-2006” at Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in 2006, he had solo exhibitions in Tokyo, Kagawa, Seoul, London, Singapore and other places. He also participated in a number of other exhibitions in and out of Japan including Gwangju Biennale (Korea), documenta (Germany), La Biennale di Venezia (Italy), Yokohama Triennale and Setouchi Triennale. He has released a large number of artist books, publications and CDs since his first artist book ≪London/Honcon≫ 1980 (Yobisha, Tokyo) in 1986. His main publications include Mienai oto kikoenai e (Invisible Sounds, Inaudible Pictures), Bi, and Nanika to nanika (Something and something) (all published by Shinchosha Publishing), Sudeni sokoni arumono (What’s already there) and Neon to enogubako (Neon and paintbox) (both published by Chikuma shobo) and the picture book Monsieur Jarry (published by Fukuinkan Shoten), and others. Ohtake has a regular essay feature “Mienai oto kikoenai e (Invisible Sounds, Inaudible Pictures),” on the monthly literary magazine Shincho. He received the Minister of Education Award for Fine Arts in 2014.
