弘前れんが倉庫美術館にて5月17日まで開催中の「杉戸洋展」の公式カタログです。
写真家・ホンマタカシが展示風景を撮り下ろし、本展のコラボレーターでもある服部一成がデザインを手がけます。

現代の日本を代表する画家の一人である杉戸洋（1970年生まれ）は、1990年代から国内外での作品発表を続けてきました。作品に登場するのは、小さな家や船、果物、木々や雨粒といった、私たちの生きる世界の中の身近なものや自然です。こうしたモチーフが、線や幾何学的な図形とともに繊細かつリズミカルに構成され、みずみずしい色彩で描き出されます。

本展で、杉戸は「余白」に目をむけます。たとえば、絵画の裏側で、カンヴァスを囲む「えり」や「へり」として貼られた紙や木片のように、すぐには気が付かない場所にあるものです。こうした「余白」は、本の表紙をめくると現れる「あそび紙 （flyleaf）」や、洋服の「裏地（liner）」など、あらゆる場所に潜んでいます。杉戸はそれらの前で立ち止まり、心を傾けることから制作をはじめるのです。本展では、1990年代から最新作までの絵画を中心に、杉戸の作品を紹介します。

また、本展のコラボレーターとして、グラフィック・デザイナーの服部一成を迎えます。杉戸の作品に触発されて、服部がデザインした壁紙が貼りめぐらされた空間の内外に、杉戸の絵画と服部の写真が展示されることで、より強く「えりとへり / flyleaf and liner」のコンセプトが際立つ空間が立ち現れます。

This is the official catalogue of the “Hiroshi Sugito: flyleaf and liner” exhibition, on view at the Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art through May 17.
The exhibition installation views are specially photographed by Takashi Homma, while the catalogue design is by Kazunari Hattori, a collaborator on the exhibition. The book also includes a transcript of the opening talk held at the venue, featuring Hiroshi Sugito, Kazunari Hattori, and Eriko Kimura (Director, Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art).

One of the leading painters in Japan today, Hiroshi Sugito (b. 1970) has been presenting work both at home and internationally since the 1990s. His paintings depict familiar objects and natural elements of the world in which we live—little houses and boats, fruit, trees, raindrops—in delicate yet rhythmical compositions notable also for their lines and geometric shapes, all rendered in vibrant hues. 
The exhibition  presents works by Sugito from the 1990s up to his latest projects, with a particular emphasis on painting. A bonus feature is the space of stunning resonance between art and brick structure specially created for the exhibition in collaboration with graphic designer Kazunari Hattori , architect of the museum’s visual identity.
