For Masaho Anotani, encounters with objects found in everyday life—fallen trees along forest roads, driftwood and other debris washed ashore, things found along the way to school or by the roadside, and discarded items left out for bulky-waste collection—are always filled with the excitement of a treasure hunt. An old map he happened to come across was one such discovery.
This series began with Anotani tracing the mountains, rivers, settlements, and other features depicted on the old map, allowing its lines to guide the movement of his pencil. Rather than researching the history or folklore of a place beforehand, he first confronts the map and begins to draw. Unexpected forms and images gradually emerge, and as he later researches place names, local histories, and legends, he says he begins to sense connections between them.
Here, we encounter not only history preserved in records, but also traditions that have continued in the land while changing their forms, along with a gaze directed toward the gods and other presences that have long been part of these places.
