大阪・梅田の中心地であるグランフロント大阪に設置された《ミューズ》（2025年～）、東京・表参道交差点で愛を歌い上げた立体作品《ラヴァーズ》（2024年）など、作品の異様なまでのインパクトで注目を集めた現代美術家・笹岡由梨子。
笹岡は映像を用いて作品を制作しています。映像には、自身が演じたり、自身の顔や身体の一部を合成したりした少し不気味でコミカルなキャラクターが登場します。初期の作品では映像の中にしか存在しませんでしたが、近作では立体物として存在するキャラクターの目や口が映像にすげ替わるなど、作品における映像とキャラクターの関係は逆転しつつあります。作品内では、笹岡が自作した歌をキャラクターが歌っています。奇天烈な歌詞とメロディーはしかし、「愛」や「家族」といった力強いメッセージを伝えています。加えて、笹岡の作品に特徴的なのは、映像の中にあえて手の痕跡を感じさせる編集のノイズを残していることです。これは、絵画における筆のタッチに通じ、映像における絵画的なものへアプローチしようとしています。
今冬、ついに開催される美術館個展の公式図録となる本書。最初期の映像作品から近作、そして今回の展覧会のために制作された新作を掲載。作品解説と自作曲の詞に加え、漫画家・東村アキコと笹岡由梨子の特別対談を収録。滋賀県立美術館 主任学芸員、荒井保洋による論考を加え、分類不能な笹岡のエネルギッシュで魅力的な、唯一無二の作品世界をつまびらかにし、作品における、映像とキャラクターの関係性とその変遷に迫ります。

Contemporary artist Yuriko Sasaoka has garnered attention for the extraordinary visual impact of her works. Examples include MUSE (2025–), installed at Grand Front Osaka in the heart of the Umeda district in Osaka, and LOVERS (2024), a three-dimensional work celebrating love at the Omotesando intersection in Tokyo.
Sasaoka creates her works using video. These videos feature characters that are slightly eerie yet comical, sometimes played by Sasaoka herself or created by synthesizing parts of her face or body. In her earlier works, the characters existed solely within the video. However, in more recent pieces, the relationship between the video and the characters has been inverted. For instance, the eyes and mouths of characters that exist as physical objects are now replaced by video projections. In Sasaoka’s works, the characters sing songs that she has composed. Despite their eccentric lyrics and melodies, these songs convey powerful messages about “love” and “family.” A distinguishing element of Sasaoka’s work is her deliberate inclusion of editing noise in the videos, which leaves traces of the human touch. She approaches video as if it were a painting, examining its painterly qualities.
This book serves as the official catalogue for Sasaoka’s highly anticipated solo museum exhibition, set to open this winter. The exhibition will feature works ranging from Sasaoka’s earliest videos to her most recent pieces, including new works created specifically for this exhibition. In addition to work commentary and lyrics to her original songs, the book includes a special dialogue between manga artist Akiko Higashimura and Yuriko Sasaoka. Yasuhiro Arai, curator of the Shiga Prefectural Museum of Art, provides an insightful analysis of Sasaoka’s artistic oeuvre, characterized by its dynamism, captivation, and distinctiveness, which defies conventional categorization. It explores the relationship between video and character in her work, tracing their evolution over time.
Yuriko Sasaoka
Yuriko Sasaoka was born in Osaka in 1988. She completed her doctoral coursework in Media Art at Kyoto City University of Arts’ Graduate School of Fine Arts in 2017 (ABD). She is currently based in Shiga Prefecture and has exhibited both domestically and internationally. Her solo exhibitions include: “Polonia Skłodowska — Curie’s Magic Lab — The Power of Migration” at the Osaka City Central Public Hall (Osaka, 2025); “Planaria” at the Property Holdings Development Group (Hong Kong, 2022); “Zniknij Z Ziemi: Video Games, No-Sex & Pi ł sudski” at the TRAFO Center for Contemporary Art (Poland, 2021); and “Hello Holy!” at the Kyoto City University of Arts Art Gallery (Kyoto, 2017). Her group exhibitions include: “For a Placard” at the National Museum of Art (Osaka, 2025); “Cabinet Cabinet Curiosity Curiosity” at Abraham & Wolf (Paris, 2024), “Made in Shiga” at Omotesando Crossing Park (Tokyo, 2024); and “The 14th Shanghai Biennale: Cosmos Cinema” (China, 2023); “Dream/Lands” at the Kanagawa Kenmin Hall Gallery (Kanagawa, 2022); “Reborn Art Festival” (Miyagi Prefecture, 2022); “Ripple Across the Water” at the Watari Museum of Contemporary Art (Tokyo, 2021); “Encounter — Infinite Variety of Faces” at the Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art (Kagawa, 2021); and others. Sasaoka has been a specially appointed lecturer at Kyoto Seika University since 2023. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Kyoto Prefecture Cultural Award Encouragement Prize (2020), the Sakuya Konohana Award (2020), and the Gold Prize at the Kyoto Art for Tomorrow 2019 from the Museum of Kyoto (2019).
