The TV animation series The Heikei Story adapted the classic war chronicle — originally handed down orally by biwa-playing minstrels — not as an epic poem, but as a lyric poem. The transformations of human relationships and the transience of time are expressed through a series of detailed depictions of spring, summer, autumn, winter, flowers, birds, the wind, and the moon, and each cut was praised as “a highly finished painting”.
